Description
In this 6 week wax working course, students will explore various wax sculpting skills, the process of lost wax casting, outsource casting, and post-casting finishing skills. Wax can be a very versatile material, precise *and* organic work can be achieved with wax. We will mainly be casting in bronze/white bronze, though the option to cast in silver will be available.
Students WILL NOT cast on premises, though we will go over in conversation the full lost wax casting process so students can better understand how to work with the wax and what to expect when getting their work back from the caster. The projects in this course are mainly based on students’ interest and if anyone is particularly struggling with what to make, there are plenty of backup project ideas (rings, charms, custom hardware, etc).
We will send out two batches of casting, one batch two weeks into the course for initial tests/ideas so students can troubleshoot for the second batch which will be four weeks into the course. Students will be responsible for the casting fees, which will generally be $10-50 per piece.
Materials, safety equipment and tools will be provided. Enrollment includes additional access to one monitored Open Studio session per week, either on Thursday afternoons from 3:00pm – 6:00pm, Fridays from 5:30pm – 8:30pm, or Sunday evenings from 5:00pm – 8:00pm.
