Description
In this course, students will develop a strong foundation in the process of metalsmithing, the act of shaping metal into functional and sculptural objects. This course will review sawing, filing, soldering, scoring/bending, texturing, forming, linkages, wire construction and more. No prior metalsmithing skills are necessary. Metal will be provided for practice and exercises, but students may need to pay for additional metals needed for their independent work.
While metalsmithing encompasses jewelry making, the projects in this course will focus less on wearable jewelry, and more on sculptural and functional metal objects. Potential projects include: small boxes, cutlery, and other miniatures.
Open studio hours to work on projects during the course are included. Open studio runs Monday (3-6pm), Thursday (3-6pm) and Friday (5-8pm). Students will have access to 4 open studio sessions during their course.
