Description

This course will explore wood and soda firing methods to enhance your work. Whether you are a sculptor or wheel thrower, the atmospheric kilns at the Steelyard are a rare experience that we are fortunate to offer. We will create forms together that are suitable to these environments while exploring the vast and various surface treatments in both green and bisqueware. Our first few weeks will focus on conversations and demonstrations focusing on atmospheric attributes. The use of slips and texture as well as clay and glaze choice will be covered. We will cover handbuilding methods as well as wheel methods within our a focus on size requirements and effectiveness. Our final weeks will focus on glaze strategies and preparing for our firings. We will look to for both the soda kiln and wood kiln by the end of our time together. Students should be able to work confidently and produce enough work to fill the kilns as a group. If you question your skill level, please feel free to reach out to us and have a conversation. This is a rare opportunity in ceramics and we hope you will join us!
