Bold Minds at the Lincoln School

Earlier this year, the Steel Yard had the honor to partner with the Lincoln School for a film project directed by Ian and Ting Barnard. The video stars Maya who participated in a week-long welding program here at the Yard in 2016. Check out the amazing video, “Bold Minds at the Lincoln School here!

Lincoln School and the Steel Yard partnered again in June 2017 for another weeklong education program in both welding and jewelry. This year we had nine young folks in the Welding program and eight in the jewelry for five full day sessions. Each participant created a piece of work but most didn’t stop there, many created multiple final projects which culminated in a final show and tell at the end of the program.

The welding students walked away with experience MIG welding, using the acetelynae torch, plasma cutting and grinding. Theresa Iafrate the welding instructor remarked, “The most rewarding part is witnessing new ideas. The students coming in and learning the tools so that they can make their creative ideas a reality.”

The jewelry students, Instructed by Heather Guidero, learned to solder, torch, drill press, hammer, filing and letter press.

Each year we look forward to these kinds of educational partnerships and bringing bright and enthusiastic new artists and makers to the yard. The Steel Yard partners with both schools and organizations to offer students a place to explore and make connections between the arts and industrial processes through custom curriculum in courses and workshops.

Educational Partnerships augment the creative opportunities available at the partner facility with a creative curriculum that highlights hands-on opportunities in ceramics, jewelry, metalworking and blacksmithing. Students are empowered to make their own artwork under the careful supervision of professional working artists.
