Blacksmithing at the RI Mini Maker Faire #pvdfest2017

June 3rd, 2017
Washington St. & Mathewson in downtown Providence
2 PM- 8 PM

Join the Steel Yard at the RI Mini-Maker Faire during PVD Fest on June 3rd, 2017! Experience the gritty magic of traditional blacksmithing first hand! We’re hauling our trailer down and will be providing live demonstrations of this historic process all day along.

You’ll witness a perfect introduction to the craft of metalworking, showcasing the basics of heating and shaping steel highlighting fundamental blacksmithing skills such as tapering, spreading, bending, scrolling, and shouldering.

“We are thrilled to be a part of PVD fest again and showcase the brilliant ingenuity of so many artists and makers. Not only is the Steel Yard’s mobile Blacksmithing trailer returning as part of the RI Mini-Maker Faire, but this year we will bring festival goers to the Yard for the post-conference dance party. Huge thanks to the Mayor, the City of Providence and Sponsors for being such great cultural partners!” Said Howie Sneider,  the Steel Yard’s Executive Director.

Returning to the stage to deliver you all one helluva demonstration is the instructor, welder, yardie and friend, Willow Zietman! Willow Zietman is a blacksmith, flameworker and metal artist. She has studied metal arts in several places, including Hampshire College, Thielsch Welding School, Penland School of Crafts, and Haystack Mountain School of Crafts, where she was the Alan Gordon Sandford Fellowship recipient in 2009. Specializing in the smaller side of blacksmithing, Willow makes kitchenware, hardware, and whatever people hold and touch and use. She lives with her hedgehogs in Pawtucket, Rhode Island.

So come on down and say hey! Learn all about Steel Yard courses, studio, residencies, public projects, events and more! Plus, all your favorite Steel Yard Swag (and some new cool stuff) will be available to purchase.
