Description

In this introduction to low temperature atmospheric firing, students will learn firing procedures specific to Raku. Raku firing is an exciting and dramatic method of firing that uses both the kiln and organic combustibles to create crackles, carbon markings, and lusters on a ceramic surface. Participants will learn how to load and fire their own completed works in a traditional raku firing.

Students should come prepared with basic ceramics skills as well as a desire to learn to manually fire kilns. While this class places most of its emphasis on glazing and firing, consultation and assistance will be given throughout the entire making process, from clay to finished pieces.

This class is designed for intermediate students who have some knowledge of ceramics processes and are looking to advance their skills.

Open studio hours to work on projects during the course are included.  Open studio runs Monday (3-6pm), Thursday (3-6pm) and Sunday (5-8pm). Students will have access to 4 open studio sessions during their course.
