Description

In this 3 week class, students will blend the art of metalworking with the art of watercolor painting. In a rare combination of hard and soft materials, students will bridge the gap between these two art forms, learning how to work with both rigid and fluid materials and pushing the limits of both art forms. During the first two weeks of the class, students will learn how to weld, plasma cut, angle grind, and construct an object out of steel. The final week, students will learn color theory, pigment opacity, brush selection, and paint application while painting their object with watercolors.

Though watercolors and welds seemingly exist at opposite ends of the sculptural spectrum, this interdisciplinary class will highlight the shared characteristics of and skills required for both mediums. It will also push students to exercise different parts of their brain and understand what forms and materials they are most drawn to. This class is intended for students of all skill levels excited to break the boundaries of painting and metalworking while improving their skills in both mediums.

Students will purchase set watercolor kits at Blick Art Materials prior to the start of the class.  Metalworking supplies are included in the cost of the course.

This course is open to students of all skill levels.

Open studio hours to work on projects during the course are included.
