Description

In this 4 week course, students will learn how to use metalworking facilities (mig welder, plasma cutter, angle grinder, etc.) to design and build a time capsule that lasts generations. During the first week, students will get comfortable in the metal shop through demos and practice using welders, grinders, and the plasma cutter. In the coming weeks, students will create hollow objects. On the last week, students will bring in memorabilia for their time capsules, place them inside flame-retardant felt, and weld their forms completely closed. Students will leave this class with improved metalworking skills as well as a finished object that acts as a personal “time machine.” This class is for individuals excited to work with metal, create unique forms, and construct a meaningful object that can last generations. For those new to metalworking, there will be lots of demos and time to practice, and for those with more experience, there will be lots of time to experiment, make, and hone your skills. Together, we’ll explore the power and lasting potential of steel.

This class is open to students of all levels of welding experience.

Open studio hours to work on projects during the course are included. Open studio runs Monday (3-6pm), Thursday (3-6pm) and Sunday (5-8pm). Students will have access to 3 open studio sessions during their course.

SCHOLARSHIPS applications are available for students who may not otherwise be able to enroll in a course. Additionally, standing sliding scale scholarships exist for QT/BIPOC students.
