Description
Are you intrigued by the idea of pouring molten metal? This foundry workshop is for you.
Under the guidance of an experienced instructor, you’ll learn the fundamentals of iron casting: creating two-part sand molds, carving using a variety of tools and processes, and preparing molds for casting. You’ll also learn the basics of how to run a cupola furnace and how to pour molten iron into molds. The instructor will go over safety procedures and a furnace captain will be on hand to ensure a safe, successful pour. At the end of class, you will remove work from your mold and clean up your casting to reveal your iron artwork.
You’re encouraged to bring items for casting, with prior coordination and approval from the instructor. The instructor will also have sample bottles openers and trivets that students can use.
Course tuition covers 40 pounds of iron and 150 pounds of sand per student; additional metal or sand will be charged by the pound. This course takes place in one weekend plus an additional Saturday. The Mold-Making workshop runs from 9am-5pm on Saturday, September 19, and Sunday, September 20. The iron pour to finish class work will be held on Saturday, October 3 at The Steel Yard.
DATES: SATURDAY & SUNDAY 9/19/26 – 9/20/26, 10/3/2026 for the pour
TIME: 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM
