Description

In this three-week class, you’ll blend the art of metalworking with the art of watercolor painting. By bridging the gap between these two art forms, you’ll learn how to work with rigid and fluid materials. During the first two weeks, you’ll learn how to weld, plasma cut, angle grind, and construct an object out of steel. During the last week, you’ll learn color theory, pigment opacity, brush selection, and paint application while painting your object with watercolors. Though watercolors and welds seemingly exist at opposite ends of the creative spectrum, this class will highlight the shared characteristics of, and skills required, for both mediums. The class will also push you to use different parts of your brain, and help you understand what forms and materials you’re most drawn to. This class is open to students of all skill levels.

SKILL LEVEL: ALL LEVELS

Open studio hours to work on projects during the course are included. Open studio runs Monday (3-6pm), Thursday (3-6pm) and Sunday (5-8pm). Students will have access to three open studio sessions during their course.

INSTRUCTOR BIO

Flora Ranis is a multidisciplinary sculptor whose practice spans metalworking, woodworking, and stone carving. She received her BA from Yale University, where she learned how to weld. At The Steel Yard, Flora leads creative metalworking courses for people of all ages and skill levels.
