Description

This hands-on course introduces you to foundational techniques in ceramic handbuilding, including pinch, coil, and slab methods, and simple mold making. You can create functional or sculptural forms while learning surface decoration and glazing techniques. Demos will include advanced options such as underglaze monoprinting on plaster and newsprint, building up forms with paper slip, and making custom ceramic press and sprig molds. Whether you’re new to clay or returning with fresh ideas, this course encourages craftsmanship, curiosity, and personal expression through the full ceramic process – from wet clay to finished, fired work.

TIME: 6:30 – 9:30 PM

SKILL LEVEL: BEGINNER

Open studio hours to work on projects during the course are included. Open studio runs Monday (3-6pm), Thursday (3-6pm) and Sunday (5-8pm). Students will have access to four open studio sessions during their course.

INSTRUCTOR BIO

Ana Popescu is a Romanian-American artist based in Providence. Working primarily in clay, she combines traditional ceramic processes with digital fabrication, architectural references, and a healthy obsession with ornament, history, and material experimentation. Before earning her MFA in ceramics from RISD in 2025, Ana spent over a decade creating immersive installations, performances, and large-scale productions in New York City and beyond. Her work has been exhibited in New York, London, Bucharest, and Providence, and she currently teaches ceramics at The Steel Yard and works as a technical assistant in RISD’s Ceramics Department.
