Towards the end of 2021 Public Projects teamed up with artist Jonathan L. Harris to create two perforated steel bus shelters for the city of Central Falls. Harris drafted detailed designs of the shelters that were both sleek and modern in appearance, while paying homage to the industrial landscape to which the structures would belong. The shelters will provide bus riders protection from the elements, while allowing light to enter through a perforated design that mimics the flow of water down the river. Over the Winter of 2021-2022, the Public Projects team fabricated the two 9.5’x7’16’ shelters in the Steel Yard studio, making the commission one of our largest projects to date. In early 2022, the first of two bus shelters was installed out in front of Central Falls Landing, an area surrounded by old mill buildings and the flowing Blackstone River. The shelter was made from corten steel for durability, and treated with a weathered finish representative of the industrial history of its location. We are confident that the Central Falls bus shelters will withstand the test of time, like some of our earliest bus shelter projects that have been standing for 10 years!
