The Steel Yard Public Projects undertook a massive project: to redesign the pedestrian overpass to Billy Taylor Park. After garnering community input over several sessions, artists Brendan Rose and Ysanel Torres designed a joyful declaration of, and welcome to, the Mount Hope neighborhood. The overpass is adorned with black-eyed-Susans, which symbolize justice, and violets, the state flower of RI. On either opening of the overpass, pedestrians can orient themselves with decorative wayfinding signs. Brendan Rose and Kayla O’Donnell fabricated the artwork while John Nguyen and Justin Figueroa fabricated the overpass fencing. The grueling installation was well worth it, and the feedback we receive continues to be overwhelmingly loving.
