FABRICATION INTERNSHIP

Following the completion of the Workforce Welding Program, graduates may apply for internship at The Steel Yard.
The Public Projects Fabrication Intern is responsible for implementing the skills and techniques learned during their recent 30-hour training towards the successful production of the Steel Yard’s functional and decorative Public Projects. Interns will work with the Workforce Projects Manager (WPM), the Public Projects Director(PPD) and other project team members to maintain a safe and efficient shop for production, and generally help with the successful completion of Public Projects. The Fabrication Internship is a 3 month long paid program.
This internship will build on skills from the Workforce Welding Program, and expand into new techniques through immersive and comprehensive learning. During this training program, interns will go on shop tours, learn from guest instructors with different skill sets, have weekly workshops to refresh and refine technical knowledge, learn budgeting processes, design and client relations.
Interns leave with 2 accredited certifications, the OSHA 30 and Forklift Certification.
Interns are empowered to think creatively to help determine details concerning fabrication, installation and delivery of all projects in consultation with the Workforce Projects Manager and the Public Projects Director.



INTERNSHIP JOB DESCRIPTION
-Assist in the fabrication of all public projects
-Maintain a safe and clean work environment
-Anticipate continued educational opportunities through hands-on learning
-Maintain an open line of communication with the WPM
-Work with WPM and or artist to complete the installation of projects
-Act as a direct representative for the Public Projects Department maintaining a positive, supportive public face and attitude as a role model in the community, with the understanding that installations are vital moments of contact in the client and community relationship
-Implement the projects’ artistic vision while following specifications, and meeting deadlines
-Notify the WPM regarding the status of tools, inventory and equipment maintenance in the Public Projects Department
-Assist in pickups, deliveries and installationsÂ
-Follow and ensure compliance of all shop policies and procedures
-Participate in fundraising events, initiatives and organizational planning meetings when requested
-Promote the Steel Yard’s mission
-Attend monthly department meetings

Applications for the fabrication internship will open following the conclusion of the Workforce Welding program. The Spring 2026 Workforce Welding Program runs from April 13th-17th. Applications for this cycle are open now.
