Description

By the end of this class, students will have a general understanding of the DC TIG welding process including tools, PPE, preparation, and processes using the Steel Yard’s TIG welders. Students will be able to identify basic safety issues and appropriate PPE for all aspects of the TIG welding process including grinding tungsten electrodes, PPE for welding, and basic shop safety.

Students will be able to set up and troubleshoot basic issues with a Miller TIG welder commonly found at the Steel Yard. Students will be able to join two pieces of mild steel using a flat weld as well as a fillet weld and be able to discuss differences between mild steel and stainless steel, which is also welded using DC TIG welding. In addition, although this class will not cover AC TIG welding, students will be able to identify differences between TIG welding mild steel and aluminum.

Students will be expected to understand basic use and safety of an angle grinder as it relates to TIG welding prep as well as basic shop safety and appropriate PPE for a welding shop. It is recommended that students have taken a weekend MIG welding class previously.

Completion of the course should give you the skills to begin your own artistic welding exploration. These classes do not lead to certification.
