Description

Come get down and dirty while learning to make functional and sculptural forms on the potter’s wheel. In this eight-week course, you’ll experience clay both as a functional building material and as an expressive medium. You’ll learn how to use the potter’s wheel to create cups, bowls, plates, vases, and pouring vessels. You will also practice throwing, trimming, making handles and spouts, and finishing and firing pieces. Color and texture will be explored through a variety of slips and glazes, and you’ll learn how to make creative decisions as you build and adorn your ceramic pieces.

Each week, a new technique will be demonstrated and a new artist’s work will be presented to inspire you. This class is open to all skill levels. You will receive a complimentary 25-pound bag of clay but may need to purchase additional clay for projects. All other materials and tools will be provided.

DATES: WENESDAYS 9/30/26 – 11/18/26

TIME: 6:30 – 9:30 PM

SKILL LEVEL: BEGINNER

Open studio hours to work on projects during the course are included. Open studio runs Monday (3-6pm), Thursday (3-6pm) and Sunday (5-8pm). Students will have access to 6 open studio sessions during their course.

INSTRUCTOR BIO

Frankie Pittorf

Frankie is an interdisciplinary artist who works primarily in ceramics, and creates work in collaboration with their younger self, often reusing old childhood drawings and motifs to explore their relationships with queerness. Frankie joined The Steel Yard as an artist-in-residence in 2022, and has continued to teach ceramics courses. When they aren’t teaching ceramics, Frankie loves to spend their time working in the studio, roller skating and making cakes, and tending to their pet snail.
