The Steel Yard currently owns 2 atmospheric kilns: an Anagama kiln and a Soda kiln. These kilns are co-operated with RISD (Rhode Island School of Design), and run based on class schedules at The Steel Yard and RISD. In line with the mission of The Steel Yard of providing access to the industrial arts, the atmospheric firings will have an option for community buy-in.
Pathways to firing with us:
- Taking a class: Twice a year, The Steel Yard runs a class called “Friends in Fire” which is a 10 week class taught by Seth Rainville on ceramics and comprehensive atmospheric firing.
- Who is this right for? Students wanting to learn more about creating ceramic forms and who want to deep dive into atmospheric firing
- Here is a link to this class: Friends in Fire
- Buy in/Workshop: Community members wanting to participate in an atmospheric firing can take a short, one day workshop on the atmospheric firing process, and subsequently buy space in the atmospheric kiln. Studios wanting to participate may purchase a pallet for studio members. Participation in the workshop is a prerequisite for participation in the firing, and folks buying in are expected to work a shift during the firing.
- Who is this right for?
- Folks already making ceramic work who want to join a firing. This option is for people who are bringing their own work from outside studios. **Clay should be a Cone 10 clay.
