MICRO-RESIDENCIES
SHORT-TERM Studio Access
The Steel Yard’s micro-residency program can help you grow and strengthen your creative industrial art practice and help your complete a specific project, commission, or prototype in a limited amount of time.
Micro-residency applications are temporarily closed as we restructure the program. If you have questions, please email residency@thesteelyard.org.
We typically host one ceramics and one metals micro-resident at a time. Micro-residents receive an all-access pass to our 10,000 square foot studio, tools, resources, and community. Take an online tour of the studio here!
You’ll forge, mold, weld, shape, and create in a shared studio space alongside a cohort of artists and makers who work in the industrial arts. Additionally, you’ll participate in events and sales, exhibit work, have access to professional development opportunities, teach and take courses, as well and take part in cross-departmental critiques.

RESIDENCY INFO SESSION

COSTS
Micro-residencies are free of charge. Residents should expect to pay for their materials.
LENGTH OF PROGRAM
We offer micro-residencies year-round, with a maximum length of three months.
ALLOY FELLOWSHIP for MICRO-RESIDENCY
To ensure that participation in the program is equitable for emerging artists, we offer a limited number of paid stipends each year to applicants in the form of Alloy Fellowships. These fellowships support artists who are new to their practice with full access to our studio and tools. Fellows contribute five hours of volunteer work per month within their department. Alloy Fellows receive a monthly stipend of $250 to support their growing creative practice, for the duration of their micro residency.
GUIDELINES AND EXPECTATIONS
Review the Resident Program Handbook for more information about the program. When applying, be prepared to provide:
- Current CV/resume
- Ten digital images (PDFs not accepted) of recent work and an image list
- A brief artist bio, written in the third person
- A narrative statement outlining how you’ll use your time in our studio
- One reference that can speak to your artistic merit
