Description
Explore alternative ways of working in basic hand building skills. We will create using the “quick coil” method, thrown slabs, and targeted pinching. These methods are used by many artists to create monumental sculpture, fine translucent vessels, and figurative work. You will also learn to use the wheel as a tool for making simple pieces to assemble complex forms. This is not your typical hand building class and would benefit the intermediate to advanced potter in finding a new way to work with immediacy! We will also spend time learning various surface techniques by utilizing slips, washes, underglazes and of course glazing. Our hope is to see hand building in a new way and inspire collaboration with our friends in the metals studio.
Each week, a new technique will be demonstrated, and a new artist’s artwork will be presented to ignite your imagination! This class is open to advanced beginners and up. Students should have knowledge of general techniques such as pinch, coil, slab, although we will be learning new methods of doing so. Students will receive a complimentary 25-pound bag of cone 6 clay but may need to purchase additional clay for their personal projects. All other materials and tools will be provided. Enrollment in this course includes additional access to one monitored Open Studio session per week.
Unfinished student work should be picked up within two weeks of the last class.
