Steel is an amazing material on its own, but once paired with other materials, the sculptural possibilities are endless! This course will begin with basic steel working skills as a foundation, then we will explore ways to incorporate additional materials like paper, fabric, plaster, and found objects. We will practice welding and various cold connections and experiment with different ways of putting materials together to make expressive sculptures or elements for installations. Students will walk away with an understanding of MIG welding, plasma, torch bending and cutting, drill press, finishing, and cold connections such as riveting and tapping.

The Steel Yard is located at 27 Sims Avenue, Providence RI 02909

For all courses, students must wear a pair of close-toed shoes like sneakers or boots (no sandals, no flip-flops, no peep-toe pumps). Also, you should dress expecting to get a little dirty. Art is messy. In addition, students in metalworking courses must wear clothes made from either cotton or wool—synthetic fabrics like fleece and polyester are not safe near an open flame. Pants are required and long sleeves are recommended. Any clothing that has been frayed is not permitted. The studio is well stocked with heavy-duty welding jackets, but if you have your own, feel free to bring it.

All students are required to fully read the Steel Yard Registration & Enrollment Policies before attending the first class. Registrants who withdraw from a course at least 10 days prior to the course’s start date may receive a refund, less a $40 registration fee. There are no refunds or rescheduling within 10 days. By not budgeting for cancellations, The Steel Yard is able to keep  costs as low as possible for our students.

The Steel Yard offers scholarships in all of our teaching departments, which make our open enrollment courses accessible to students who may not otherwise be able to afford this unique industrial arts opportunity.
