Description

In this introduction to atmospheric firing course, students will be learn firing procedures specific to Raku firing. Raku firing is a spontaneous and dramatic method of firing that uses both kiln and combustibles to create crackles, carbon markings, and lusters on a ceramic surface.

Participants will learn how to load and fire their own completed works in a traditional raku firing. Students should come prepared with basic ceramics skills as well as a desire to learn to manually fire kilns. While this class places most of its emphasis on glazing and firing, consultation and assistance will be given throughout the entire making process, from clay to finished pieces.

Students will receive a complimentary 25-pound bag of Raku clay but may need to purchase additional clay for their personal projects. All other materials and tools will be provided. Enrollment in this course includes additional access to one monitored Open Studio session per week.

Unfinished student work should be picked up within two weeks of the last class.
