Description

This class will be an introduction to forge welding, a traditional skill used for centuries to join steel before the advent of gas or electrical welding. Using a coal forge, hammer, anvil, and bending jig students will create chain links from steel and then forge weld the ends together, creating a multiple unbroken links. Students will explore basic hammer skills, forging and bending, and proper techniques for forge welding. At the end of the class the student will know how to weld steel into a single unbroken piece as well as experience how chain was made by blacksmiths hundreds of years ago. The forge welding techniques learned in this class can be applied to almost any forge welding project. Students should wear comfortable, natural fiber (cotton or wool) clothing, long pants, and closed-toe shoes and expect to get dirty.
