One of the great tricks of blacksmithing is making a completely non-organic material (steel) look like something living, like a leaf. In this class, students will learn the basics of blacksmithing, but with the intention of forging a small leaf pendant (or keychain fob, your choice). In three hours, you’ll learn about tapering, isolating, spreading, shaping, and texturing steel. This class focuses on forging pieces that are closer to jewelry than traditional blacksmithing wares. No previous experience necessary; all tools and materials are provided. Students will leave the workshop with a completed leaf pendant.

The Steel Yard is located at 27 Sims Avenue, Providence RI 02909

For all courses, students must wear a pair of close-toed shoes like sneakers or boots (no sandals, no flip-flops, no peep-toe pumps). Also, you should dress expecting to get a little dirty. Art is messy. In addition, students in metalworking courses must wear clothes made from either cotton or wool—synthetic fabrics like fleece and polyester are not safe near an open flame. Pants are required and long sleeves are recommended. Any clothing that has been frayed is not permitted. The studio is well stocked with heavy-duty welding jackets, but if you have your own, feel free to bring it.

All students are required to fully read the Steel Yard Registration & Enrollment Policies before attending the first class. Registrants who withdraw from a course at least 10 days prior to the course’s start date may receive a refund, less a $40 registration fee. There are no refunds or rescheduling within 10 days. By not budgeting for cancellations, The Steel Yard is able to keep  costs as low as possible for our students.
