Description

One of the joys of blacksmithing is making metal look like it’s not metal at all! This beginner course focuses on forming small, simple leaves for pendants, key ring fobs, charms, and other small trinkets. In three hours, students will learn the basics of heating, forging, and shaping steel into organic shapes. This is a great course for jewelry makers who want to cross over to blacksmithing! Think precision and attention to detail, rather than brute force. No previous experience necessary; all tools and materials are provided. Students will leave the workshop with at least one small forged, textured leaf.

LOCATION

The Steel Yard is located at 27 Sims Avenue, Providence RI 02909

WHAT TO WEAR

For all courses, students must wear a pair of close-toed shoes like sneakers or boots (no sandals, no flip-flops, no peep-toe pumps). Also, you should dress expecting to get a little dirty. Art is messy. In addition, students in metalworking courses must wear clothes made from either cotton or wool—synthetic fabrics like fleece and polyester are not safe near an open flame. Pants are required and long sleeves are recommended. Any clothing that has been frayed is not permitted. The studio is well stocked with heavy-duty welding jackets, but if you have your own, feel free to bring it.

ENROLLMENT POLICY

All students are required to fully read the Steel Yard Registration & Enrollment Policies before attending the first class. Registrants who withdraw from a course at least 10 days prior to the course’s start date may receive a refund, less a $40 registration fee. There are no refunds or rescheduling within 10 days. By not budgeting for cancellations, The Steel Yard is able to keep  costs as low as possible for our students.

SCHOLARSHIP

The Steel Yard offers scholarships in all of our teaching departments, which make our open enrollment courses accessible to students who may not otherwise be able to afford this unique industrial arts opportunity.
