Youth Programs

The Steel Yard partners with organizations to offer young adults a place to explore, invent and make connections between arts education, experimental learning and vocational training through courses, workshops and camps. The Steel Yard’s after and out-of-school, hands-on opportunities in glass, ceramics, jewelry, mixed media and found object sculpture, blacksmithing and metalworking allow students to make their own artwork under the supervision of working artists.
Older youth already trained with us sometimes serve as Teaching Assistants in our middle and high school programs, assist in our Public Projects department, enroll in welding certification programs or choose to continue in other arts education programs.

Open-Enrollment Youth Programs

Interested in taking a course at the Steel Yard?  Anyone over the age of 15 may enroll in our courses.  Or, continue reading below to find our more about our youth-specific programs offered for free or at very low cost.

Youth Enrichment Partnerships (YEP)

Youth Enrichment Partnerships (YEP) are organized with collaborating schools and organizations.  The Steel Yard and our partner decide on the medium to be taught, the class content and the learning and age needs of the program.

Sponsored Youth Programs

Individuals, schools and organizations are invited to sponsor Steel Yard youth programs for their students and organization members. These high quality courses will introduce the industrial arts and industry to new audiences at an affordable price. These classes are custom designed to the sponsor and their constituents’ needs and wants.

Summer Camps

The Steel Yard’s open enrollment summer camps offer youth an introduction into the industrial arts along with teaching practical, vocational and business skills. These are free programs made possible by foundations and individual donors. Every summer Camp Metalhead introduces youth to the basics of welding and metal forming, the material properties of steel, the range of applications in the metalworking industry, as well as how to design and implement a commissioned public art project. Past projects include a composting system for Providence’s Southside Community Land Trust, an information kiosk now installed in the heart of Olneyville, and gates for the Peace and Plenty Community Park in the Elmwood neighborhood.

Tours

We are available for tours with local school and youth-serving community organizations—just call ahead to schedule.
