Help The Steel Yard Raise The Roof
The beginning of summer brought some bad weather to the Ocean State, especially on June 8th when an overnight storm uprooted trees, knocked out power, flattened highway signs and billboards and caused many of us to run for cover in our basements. One victim of that storm was the Steel Yard. Our Mi

Courses FAQ
How do I get to the Steel Yard?
Check out our directions page.
Who are your courses for?
Everybody! For beginners our courses are a great chance to gain exposure to a range of industrial art forms in a safe and creative environment. Experienced artists, tradespeople, and contractors may take a course to broaden their skills, develop new work, or add to their portfolio. Regardless of your skill level or ultimate goal, there is nothing like the excitement of cutting through steel with a 6,000° flame or spinning a wet lump of clay into a new bowl.
Who teaches your courses?
Our instructors are all working artists and tradespeople who are deeply invested in their craft. As explorers and innovators, they haven’t forgotten the excitement of trying something for the first time and they enjoy sharing in the process of discovery.
How many people are in each class?
All of our classes are small, with a maximum of five or six students, so everyone gets plenty of attention and encouragement.
Do you have any age restrictions?
We do. All students must be at least 15 years old. Students under the age of 18 must have a parent or guardian sign our Liability Waiver (doc) and Photo Release (doc) before they start the course.
How should I dress?
For all courses, students must wear a pair of close-toed shoes like sneakers or boots (no sandals, no flip-flops, no peep-toe pumps). The studio is very big and not very well insulated, so dressing in warm layers is recommended during the colder months. Also, dress expecting to get a little dirty. Art is messy.
In addition, students in metalworking courses must wear clothes made from either cotton or wool—synthetic fabrics like fleece and polyester are not safe near an open flame. Pants are required and long sleeves are recommended. Any clothing that has been frayed is not permitted. The studio is well stocked with heavy-duty welding jackets, but if you have your own, feel free to bring it.
Do I need to bring anything with me?
All safety equipment and tools will be provided. If you have an extra-special pair of
safety glasses, or a favorite hammer, you certainly can bring it. If you don’t, don’t worry, we have you covered. Any exceptions will be noted in the course description.
Bringing a sketchbook or some paper is always a good idea. Some people like to take notes, and you’ll need somewhere to write down all the good ideas you have.
If you are taking a course that meets during the daytime, like one of our weekend workshops, then you might want to bring a lunch. We are also right around the corner from Federal Hill and Eagle Square, so there are a couple of sandwich shops nearby where you can grab something during the break.
