In this class, students will cast decorative glass tableware and create original sculptural glass objects. Learn how to melt glass in digitally-controlled kilns using a variety of glass casting techniques. Over 8 weeks, students will sculpt with clay and wax, make silicone rubber molds from found objects and learn about cold-working glass. We will cast glass in both open-faced plaster/silica molds and closed-form molds using the lost-wax method. Focusing on individual projects, students will transform their ideas with molten glass melted at high temperatures. Throughout the course we will discuss firing schedules, annealing glass and various glass working techniques so that students leave with a practical understanding of kiln casting. No previous glass experience necessary—this class is open to all levels. Students will be provided with glass for practice and exercises, but must pay for additional glass needed for their independent work. This is estimated at $50-$150 depending on size of projects.
