Summer Youth Camps

The Steel Yard is excited to expand Camp Metalhead in 2017 - This summer, we will be offering Camp opportunities in jewelry and ceramics as well as welding. If you'd like to notified about enrollment and scholarship opportunities, please join our mailing list here.

Camp Metalhead 2013

Each summer we provide area youth with an opportunity to explore creative metalworking in a safe and fun environment.

Spend a week ripping through steel with gas torches and fusing it back together with a 10,000° electrical arc! If you are between the ages of 14 and 18, let Camp Metalhead introduce you to creative metal fabrication. You will learn how to use the MIG welder, the oxygen-acetylene torch, various metal saws, and grinders to heat, cut, join, bend, and polish steel. You will use your new skills to work on personal projects to take home with you. This is a great opportunity to explore welding for the first time - No previous experience necessary. All lunches, materials, safety equipment, and tools will be provided.

After successfully completing the program, Metalheads will have access to our Open Studios free of charge for as long as they are in high school or under 18 years of age.  During these studio sessions, students can work on their own projects and spend time experimenting in our shop with the support and guidance of skilled monitors.

In 2017, Summer Camps will run the week of July 24th; enrollments are limited and will be open in April on a first come-firse serve basis. If you'd like to notified about enrollment and scholarship opportunities, please join our mailing list here. Information about how to apply for a scholarship is available here. Scholarship applicants should mark 'SUMMER CAMP' on their application to be considered.

Camp Metalhead participants must be between the ages of 14 and 18. Enrollment is limited.
