Save the date for the first-ever Arts in Mind Festival, March 15-16, 2012. It kicks off Friday March 15 with a special Moth slam, co-hosted by Dan Kennedy & me on the theme "Going Sane."
On Saturday March 16, we'll have more explorations of the arts & creativity & mental health, including:
- A session for mental health professionals on the creative arts as a path to recovery and wellness, featuring great minds from the Museum of Modern Art, the Fountain Gallery, Fountain House, the Sandor Ferenczi Center at the New School, and the Austen Riggs Center.
- A panel on how controversies over children's literature opens a window onto the young psyche, featuring the Newberry Medal-winning author Lois Lowry; Pamela Paul, the children's books editor of The New York Times Book Review, and Ellen Handler Spitz, an eminent scholar of children's literature. (This event was originally scheduled for this evening, Dec 13, but has been moved to be a part of the festival.)
- A session in which prominent artists answer the question: "What's Your Hang-Up?" Co-curated by Amanda Stern.

Grant deadline for RISCA Grants extended to May 1st April 2, 2012
RISCA offers Project Grants to individuals each year. These grants are aimed at 'creative and talented artists who seek to produce, perform, teach or share their work with the public. Project grants to individuals might include the coordination of community arts events, public performances, arts workshops, creative collaborations, and exhibitions and installations with a strong public component.' The best part is that the applicants don't need to apply with a 501(c)3, and the deadline has been extended until May 1st! That gives you a month to dream big and apply for funding!
>>Learn more about this opportunity here.
You can also apply for a Fellowship Grant through RISCA, the deadline for this has also been extended to May 1st. This grant opportunity awards funds for 'the creative development of artists by enabling them to set aside time to pursue their work and achieve specific creative and career goals. Artists are encouraged to apply when they have created a substantial body of work that they are prepared to present in a professional manner.' This is an amazing opportunity that everybody should apply for, especially because it's simply portfolio based and there is no application fee associated with it!
Vogue Italia: fancy things for fancy people. In Italy. March 28, 2012
I excited that my knuckle dusters are going to be in this months Vogue Italia magazine! So, if you see this amazingly overthetop cover on news stands, buy it! Seriously, thought... I'm having a tough time getting a copy of the magazine here, so, I'll pay you back. Or just autograph your copy. I'm honored to be included in this publication, especially considering the theme, which is crazy!
To make me even more excited, I just found out that my work also made the cover story! Check out the two images below that I was able to pull from a GIF that Vogue Italia made as a preview for the issue. I love how bright, saturated, and glossy all the images are. Very candy shoppe meets Priscilla Queen of the Desert. I can already tell that I want to frame every image and hang them on my walls for inspiration!

I'm new here... August 16, 2011
Hello! My name is Islay, and I’m the new Communications Director and Volunteer Coordinator here at the Yard. You probably already read about my recent arrival in Augusts' Newsletter, but I wanted to use the blog to introduce myself a little more thoroughly.
I have an active studio practice, where I focus on using jewelry to reformat everyday/neglected materials in a precious or aesthetically appealing way. I am particularly interested in emphasizing and exploring concepts of object value with my work. As a result, I find that I draw a great deal of inspiration from historical works. On a different note, I also love puns, so I find myself using art to make subtle jokes a lot, too.
I’ve been a jewelry instructor here at the Yard for about three years now, and I also teach CE classes at RISD. I really appreciate these opportunities to teach, as I think it’s really important for me to share my skills with others. I also think that teaching is a good way for me to inform people about the field of Contemporary Art Jewelry, and to break down any preconceived notions that people have about Jewelry.
I've also been the Gallery Director at Hera Gallery, a non-profit art gallery in Wakefield, for the past four years. working at Hera also got me interesed in exhibition design and curating shows independently... I've done a couple exhibitions on my own so far. Ok, I don’t want to devote too much more internet space to myself… but, if you want to find out more about who I am, you can check out my website and my personal blog. Otherwise, I look forward to seeing you around the Yard... Please feel free to stop me and introduce yourself if you see me wandering around!
